Objectives
1. To improve the health and wellbeing of Australian children by educating them about grains and the correct amount (especially wholegrains) to include as part of a healthy diet.
2. To show children (their parents and teachers) how delicious grains are and demonstrate easy ways to incorporate them into the diet.
Target
Primary - stage 3 & 4 school children in NSW
Secondary - teachers and parents
Measurement (how these are measured quantifiably year on year needs to be discussed)
Number of participating students and number of participating schools. Aim to grow participation by 10% year on year.
Results of pre and post survey to children and parents showing a trend towards.
improvement of knowledge about grains and legumes.
consuming a more healthy diet inclusive of grains and legumes.
Positive teacher feedback.
Ideas Stage 3 - Need students to understand that including grains in the diet is essential to a healthy life. Need students to learn about grains. Students should create an advertising campaign targeting their peers to promote the health and other benefits of including grains in the diet. Students must create a physical example of one element of their campaign and prepare a pitch demonstrating how and why this element should be been used. Stage 4 - Need students to understand that including grains in the diet is essential to a healthy life. Need students to learn about grains. Students should create a product made of grains which meets the Healthy Schools Guidelines. This product should be appealing to their peers with the goal of it being included their lunchbox. Packaging needs to be developed (need to consider weight, best before, nutrition panel (using NUTTAB), dimensions, what's it's made from (inner and outer), graphics/messaging, food safe materials, food standards code). Robyn Murray, GLNC, is very knowledgeable about packaging. This concept would rule out hot food.
Special Considerations Promotion - suggest a well thought out promotion plan is developed to promote this initiative to teachers. Suggest we also have a promotion plan to assist teachers and students to promote the benefits of grains to parents eg. recipe cards, healthy eating guide. After the new Australian Dietary Guidelines are released GLNC will develop a new guide on easy grain meal solutions. These could be provided to schools for the students to take home to their parents during the initiative. Australian Dietary Guidelines - It is expected that the Guidelines will be released in September 2012 (although this could be delayed). This will probably impact messaging in the initiative eg. 4+ serves a day of grain food may change. Michelle Broom, Nutrition Manager from GLNC will be able to assist with interpreting the new guidelines.
